Sailing Glove Leathers

Sailing has always been a very popular pastime and lifestyle. Whether sailing in warm or cold conditions there is the genuine need to wear a glove to provide protection from the elements to the hand and provide enhanced grip characteristics all within a very comfortable design. Following on from this there are typically three glove sectors, being short fingered gloves, full fingered gloves and specific highly insulated mitts that usually are used as a secondary glove.

Firstly the key aspect is providing a leather that has high strength and abrasion resistance characteristics due to the immense strain that will be placed on the glove. Consequently our material of choice is either kangaroo or goatskin for this type of glove due to their base fibre structures possessing the durability to withstand abrasion from the repeated flexing and rubbing, whilst still providing high levels of breathability, dexterity and dimensional stability. Our recommended thickness of leather for this type of glove can ranges between 0.7 – 0.9 mm, although this can be adapted depending upon the construction of the glove.

Secondly is the integration of a very high specification salt-water resistant tannage into the leather, where the entire fibre structure is treated at a microscopic level with synthetic hydrophobing polymers, providing a permanent and durable effect. This feature is extremely critical and consequently creates an enhanced moisture management system for the glove, ensuring that the hands of the sailor stay dry and comfortable. Furthermore, this bespoke water resistant tannage also serves to offer very fast drying out of the glove if it does become wet, and superb dry soft properties to stop the leather drying out hard.

Our leathers are also tanned to provide high levels of perspiration resistance in the tannage, to ensure that the leather stays soft and supple throughout its lifetime. Standard leathers simply soak up the sweat and then dry out very hard with the leather eventually shrinking and cracking. Again this is very important for users in warmer climates.

A textured leather surface to enhance the grip characteristics of the leather is also a possibility, which also offers the brand a material with very high cutting coefficients. We can incorporate a special friction enhancing treatment to offer a more secure grip in wet conditions.

We also have access to many other leading synthetic materials that offer very high abrasion resistance. Contact us today for more information on how we can help you create or enhance your sailing glove product range: darryl@drleather.com
