Snow Sports Glove Leathers

Snow sports used to primarily consist of skiing, but nowadays it has developed to include snowboarding and other more modern facets. There are a number of key elements that are universal in the materials used in the gloves, with the user requiring protection from the elements, offering enhanced grip and abrasion resistance characteristics and all contained within a very comfortable design. Firstly the key aspect is providing a leather that has good strength and abrasion resistance characteristics.

Depending upon the style of the glove we can offer either hairsheep (cabretta), kangaroo or goatskin in general for our starting point. Each fibre structure has its distinct individual advantages: Hairsheep offers an ultra soft and tactile feel, kangaroo leathers allowing gloves to be crafted with extreme high tensile strength characteristics whilst retaining good flexibility and goatskin having one of the highest abrasion resistant grain structures known and are very suited to snowboarding gloves fintertip sections. These fibre structures all still possess the internal makeup to confer exceptional conformity to the hand, whilst still providing high levels of breathability and dimensional stability.

Secondly is the integration of a very high specification water resistant tannage into the leather, where the entire fibre structure is treated with synthetic hydrophobing polymers, providing a permanent and durable effect. This feature creates an enhanced moisture management system for the glove, ensuring the hands remain dry, warm and comfortable. Furthermore, this bespoke water resistant tannage also serves to offer very fast drying out of the glove if it does become wet, and superb dry soft properties to stop the leather drying out hard.

We also engineer our leathers to provide high levels of perspiration resistance in the tannage, to ensure that the leather stays soft and supple throughout its lifetime. Standard leathers simply soak up the sweat and then dry out very hard with the leather eventually shrinking and cracking.

A textured leather surface to enhance the grip characteristics of the leather is also a possibility, which also offers the brand a material with very high cutting coefficients. We can incorporate a special friction enhancing treatment to offer a more secure grip in wet conditions. We also have access to many other leading synthetic materials that offer very high abrasion resistance.

Another aspect that is often forgotten is the need to ensure the dye system used has good wet and dry lightfastness characteristics to ensure there is no fading of the colour.
